American Federation of Labor is established in Columbus, Ohio.

December 5, 1886

Founded by Samuel Gompers and others, it is initially a loose-knit association of trade unions. Less ideological and more job-oriented than the Knights of Labor, the AFL becomes the dominant national labor organization in the country and merges with the Congress of Industrial Organizations to form the AFL-CI in 1955.
